Using a Pencil With 3-5 Year Olds

Children need to develop their fine motor muscles before they learn to use a writing tool. Typically activities include using clay or play dough. Children can begin using a writing tool very early. In the beginning of this process, use large preschool crayons or primary markers. Sidewalk chalk is also a good tool. Using a variety of tools will help your child develop overall fine motor control.

Children go through a variety of pencil grip states as illustrated to the right. By the time a child is about 4½ they will begin to use a mature pencil grip.

Using Scissors with 3-5 Year Olds

Before using any school supply such as scissors or crayons, it is important to help children develop their small hand muscles. This can be done by allowing children to pick up small objects, turning the lids of jars, picking up small objects using finger tips, etc.

Scissor Development

Practicing cutting with scissors helps develop the muscles needed to use a pencil. Cutting helps develop the eye-hand coordination and strengthens the muscles needed to write.

The correct scissor position is with the thumb and middle finger in the handles of the scissors, and the index finger on the outside of the handle to stabilize, and fingers four and five curled into the palm.

Where Do We Begin?

Begin by using card weight junk mail. Let children cut! Don't worry if your child has difficulty at first. Next time you cut, again demonstrate the correct way. Be patient. From there move to small random pieces of cutting strips, and then big geometric shapes.
